In this article, we'll explore how UPS and FedEx handle address corrections and the associated charges. We'll also share valuable tips to help you avoid incurring these fees, ensuring a smooth and cost-effective small parcel shipping process.
In most cases, the shipper will be charged an 'address correction fee' for any wrong address UPS corrects or completes.
UPS states that if your shipment has an incorrect or incomplete address, they will make reasonable efforts to find the correct or complete address. In such cases, UPS will provide the shipper with the accurate address after securing it. UPS may also fix an incorrect or incomplete address using information obtained from either the sender of a package or the recipient (consignee).
However, an address that was initially validated by UPS might still be considered incorrect or insufficient for completing delivery. In such instances, UPS may make the necessary corrections.
We haven't found recent information from UPS regarding address correction surcharges. However, this document, dated May 2017, specifies the following charges for UPS address correction:

Note that, due to safety concerns, you cannot change the delivery address for dangerous goods shipments. These items can be held at a nearby pickup point or returned to the sender. Shipments containing dry ice are the only exception.

UPS contacts the sender or recipient to obtain accurate address information when a shipment has an incorrect or incomplete address. Pre-validated addresses that turn out insufficient for delivery are also subject to correction by UPS. In both cases, the shipper is assessed an address correction fee.
What tools does UPS provide to validate a shipping address before it is sent?UPS WorldShip software includes a 'validate ship-to address' tool that confirms an address is correct and deliverable before a shipment is tendered. Address validation is also available through UPS.com and UPS CampusShip for shippers who prefer web-based platforms. Pre-validating addresses through these tools eliminates the conditions that trigger address correction fees.
Under what conditions will FedEx accept a request to change a delivery address?FedEx accepts address change requests only when three conditions are met: there are no account-level restrictions on address changes, the new address is within the same country, and the shipment has not yet been delivered. Requests that fail any of these conditions are declined. If no corrected address is available, shippers can request that the package be held at a FedEx location for pickup.
Can a dangerous goods shipment have its FedEx delivery address corrected?FedEx does not permit delivery address changes for dangerous goods shipments due to safety regulations, with one exception: shipments containing dry ice. For dangerous goods that cannot be rerouted, FedEx offers the option to hold the package at a nearby pickup point or return it to the sender. Dry ice shipments are the only dangerous goods category eligible for an address correction.
What steps does a shipper take when a FedEx package is delivered to the wrong address?A shipper contacts FedEx customer service to open a retrieval case for the misdelivered package. The assigned driver retrieves the shipment from the incorrect address and makes a redelivery attempt the same day. If same-day redelivery is not possible, the driver attempts delivery again on the following business day.
