Does FedEx Have Extra Charges?

FedEx does have extra charges that apply on top of the standard shipping rate, and these can mainly be grouped into two categories: Value Added Services and Surcharges.

  • Value Added Services: Value Added Services are additional services that can enhance the convenience or security of a shipment. These services are elected by the customer and typically come at an extra cost on top of the standard shipping rate. Some examples include Weekend delivery, declared value coverage, on-demand care, etc.
  • Surcharges: Surcharges are additional fees levied by FedEx based on the characteristics and circumstances of a shipment. Some examples of surcharges include Residential delivery charges, address correction charges, etc.

How Does FedEx Charge You?

FedEx charges you for shipping based on your shipment’s content, weight, size, origin, destination and chosen shipping service. You can use FedEx rate tables or you can use their online shipping calculator for a more precise and customized shipping quote.

Keep in mind that FedEx may verify the weight and volume of your shipment. If the details are found to be inaccurate, you may be charged additional correction and handling fees.

What Is an Oversize Fee?

An oversized fee is an additional charge applied to packages that exceed the specified size and weight limits set by the shipping carrier. This fee is levied to cover the extra handling and transportation costs associated with larger or unusually shaped parcels.

What Is FedEx Oversize Charge?

The FedEx oversize charge is a fee applied to packages that surpass 96 inches in length or 130 inches in combined length and girth are subject to an oversize fee. The charge is also based on the package’s actual rounded weight or dimensional weight, whichever is greater. Apart from express international shipments, packages are subject to a 90-lb. minimum billable weight.

The FedEx oversize charge is implemented as follows:

  • It is applied per package for U.S. domestic express services, as well as U.S. domestic and international ground services.
  • For international express services, the charge is applied per shipment.
  • If a U.S. domestic multiweight package meets either of the conditions mentioned above, it will incur an oversize charge.
